Artist Statement

The art that I make is often contemplative and introspective. It makes an effort to reveal and to conceal simultaneously. The process of making art also never fails to teach me something new about who I am, what I do and where I belong. The techniques that I apply are a result of an interaction between my subject matter, my canvas and myself. It is also a natural evolution from the techniques that initially began painting with; pointillism. In the current style in which I paint, I aspire to carve and shape the subject matters with my paint and brush. Each stroke is carefully calculated and rehearsed before it is applied onto the canvas. This is extremely important for me because I am forming the tendens and the muscles of my subject matter and thus, each stroke being in the right place, comes together to form the landscape of my paintings. The men in this series of abstract portraitures were selected with the specific intent of reflecting upon my relationships with the subjects. The deeper comprehension of relationships that I seek thus allows for the physical and emotional void of the missing male figure in my life to be slowly, slowly, closed. Annette Heitmann

2 Days left before our grand opening! OH! it’s nerve wrecking, to have to deliver a good opening speech, to have to entertain friends and family ANd to speak to one and all who asks about my works. it’s be great of course ;) i wonder how the event will unfold itself. We’ve never had such an experience and privillge of hosting and curating a show before. We’ve done a lot of planning and, IT’s SHOW TIME!

So, after a 2 week hiatus, i’m finally back on track with my painting progress. Oh if only God made the days be twice as long and gave us 3 times as much energy for all that we aspire to do, I’d be able to spend so much more time Arting=)

In any case, I took some close up pictures of the brush strokes on my paintings. Do indulge!

Annette Heitmann is the kind of artist who loves exploring and experimenting with varying artistic mediums and materials. She’s specialised in film (the media), paper cutting and print making and is currently playing with oil paints, drapery, fine pencil drawings and screenwriting. Annette’s themes often evoke a sense of a human element. She is hardly ever detarched from her chosen subject matters and she believes that this helps her push the quality of the art produced, each time it is being produced.

Will you be/ So Close is Annette’s way of recognising the men who have played key roles in shaping her character, beliefs and value system so as for her to become the person that she is today. Regardless of the actual nature of their impact, Annettes paints either to honor them, to be closer to them in her act of painting their portraits, or to ponder upon her relationship with them, sometimes in an attempt to seek a sense of closure between her and the personality behind those portraits.

A Study.
